child sensing what is coming up

A reader asked:

This week a 17m I care for has been real clingy to mom at drop off time. He screams and cries. I noticed to this week she has been really clingy to him and staying longer at drop off. Tomorrow he is due to go in to be recircumsized (the first time it was not done right). I have been told before that sometimes a child can sense when something is going to happen. Is this a statement that may be true?

A child can sense emotions of others, not the actual event of being circumsized. For example, when you have a tense meeting or test or something like that that causes stress, you give off body language that alerts others to your feelings. You may clench your fists, breath shallow, take deep breaths, flush, etc. We all do this.

We all also pick up on other's "Cues" and take on other's feelings. Have you ever been in a room with someone who is down and complaining about everything in life and suddenly you feel yourself feeling a bit down? Children are sensitive to the emotions being put off by others and in this case, I would guess the child is sensing the tension in those around him.
