Parten's classic study of play

Many years ago Mildren Parten was responsible for organizing children's play into categories that are still used today. They are as follows:

  1. Unoccupied play - child will move about room and randomly play with an object for a second or two without purposeful meaning or a goal.
  2. Solitary play - child plays along with an object and is engrossed in what s/he is doing but does not seem interested in what other children in the room might be doing.
  3. Onlooker play - child watches what other children are doing and may asked questions but does not enter into the actual play of the other children.
  4. Parallel play - child plays separately from others but in the same manner as those around him or her as if mimicking their play.
  5. Associative play - child interacts with others in play but with little or no organization. Rules of play have no meaning but the child may share or lend toys.
  6. Cooperative play - child socially interactions with others in meaningful play.

It is very difficult and expensive to undo after you are married the things that your mother and father did to you while you were putting your first six birthdays behind you. - Bureau of Social Hygiene Study, 1928
