cyclothymic disorder
Cyclothymic Disorder refers to a chronic and fluctuating mood disturbance
involving several episodes of hypomanic symptoms. 'Hypo' stands for a
lowered, or depressed mood while 'hyper' stands for an elevated mood. Young
children are not typically diagnosed with cyclothymic disorder because the
disorder develops over time and often is not recognized until the child is
older.
Even so, Cyclothymic Disorder tends to develop early in life with
approximately 0.4% to 1.0% of the population having Cyclothymic Disorder.
There is a 15-50% risk that an individual with Cyclothymic Disorder will
develop Bipolar I Disorder or Bipolar II Disorder. The symptoms must have
been present for at least two years.
