Hyperlexia is a disorder that has many symptoms that are similar to
Autism, ADHD, and Asperger's Disorder. Unlike Autism or Asperger's
Disorder, however, a child with Hyperlexia has better social and
language skills. The child typically is also of higher intelligence. The
key symptom that sets Hyperlexia away from other disorders is the
child's fascination and fixation on numbers and letters.
The prominent symptoms of
Hyperlexia include:
-
Normal development until sometime
between 1 and 2 when social skills and language begin to regress.
- Difficulty reading social cues and meanings of words, gestures,
facial expressions, and emotions.
- A fascination and precocious ability to read numbers and letters
at an early age.
- Difficulty initiating and sustaining friendships with others.
- An intense need for structure and routine.
- Difficulty with abstract
thought.
- Sensory integration
issues.
- Self stimulation behaviors.
