hello - goodbye
Materials: None
Introduction:
I often work with young children
who do not respond when spoken to. This is a form of control and needs to be
broken at an early age. Children need to know that when they are spoken to,
they are expected to respond in a timely and appropriate manner. If they do
not do so, it is important that they be taught how to do this.
Today we are going to talk about ways to
start talking with people and how to stop talking with people. What are we
going to talk about today? (Have children repeat.) Good listeners!
Objective/Purpose:
Children will learn to say and
respond to opening and closing statements.
Procedure:
1. When we start talking to someone, we usually start
by saying certain words, such as 'Hello.' Who can think of other words we
might use? (Kids will usually give responses such as 'Hi,' 'Hey,' etc.)
2. Yes, and when we are done talking with someone, we
usually say certain words too. Does anyone have any idea of what we might
say? (Kids usually give responses such as 'Goodbye,' 'Bye,' etc.)
3. Great. I need two volunteers to come up here and
show us how to start and end a conversation. Help the students say hello,
talk briefly, and then say goodbye.
4. Find a partner to practice with and take turns
saying hello, starting the conversation, and ending the conversation by
saying goodbye.
Practice & Extended Activities:
Practice saying hello and goodbye in various languages
such as these:
Spanish
Buenos Dias (Hello)
Adios (Goodbye)
Hola (Hello)
Buenos Tardes (Good Afternoon)
Buenos Noches (Good Night)

If
I had influence with the good fairy who is supposed to preside over the
christening of all children, I should ask that her gift to each child in
the world be a sense of wonder so indestructible that it would last
throughout life. - Rachel Carson
