STOP AND GO
Materials: None
Introduction
Some children have difficulty processing
directions, or have difficulty following teacher directions because they are
so self-absorbed in their own activities. The game of 'Stop and Go' allows
the child to practice listening and hearing teacher direction while helping
the child gain body control and impulse control.
Objective/Purpose
Child will
respond appropriately to the commands of "stop" and "go".
Procedure:
1.
This activity works best in a large
area. Tell children they are going to play a stop and go game. Show the
children the stop and go sign and ask if they know what the words on them
mean.
2.
Tell them they are going to play a game
about stop and go. When you say "go" and hold up the green go sign, they
should move in the way they are directed. But when you say "stop" and hold
up the stop sign, they should freeze.
3.
Have the children walk for the first
couple of times. As they get used to the idea you can have them run, skip,
hop, tiptoe, skate, etc.
Practice & Extended Activities:
Use this activity when
having to transition to another room or activity. Children love the change
of pace and will be more in tune to following direction and getting to where
they need to be without trouble. |
