Caregivers' Perceptions About Their Children Identified as Having Atypical Behavior

Who's fault is it when a child misbehaves? The child's? The mother's? The school's?

This 300+ page book offers information and insight into factors related to how a caregiver views his or her child. The book explores:

  • caregiver thoughts and feelings about themselves

  • child factors that interfere with the relationship

  • caregiver issues in relation to the child's behavior

  • socio-economic and cultural factors that influence the relationship

This qualitative study of 8 caregivers of children with severe behavior problems provides a comprehensive look at the many influences that support or harm the caregivers' relationships with their children.

Meet Beth, a young woman in her early twenties faced with raising a child on her own after being raped. Gary's son, Ben, was abandoned by his mother at one-month-old, leaving the new father on his own with his child. Tara cries openly about her situation, telling in detail how her son has tried to kill her. He is five years old.

Written in 2003 as a dissertation, this book includes methodological strategies, three theological frameworks from which the study was based, and references.
